Super Identity and Secret Identity: John Egbert, mostly known as Airtime (previously the Heir of Breath, Savior of the Waking World, The Windy Thing, Gust of Heir, and whatever other idiotic-sounding epithets he came up with on the spot).
Alliance: Hero
Gender Preference: Male
Age: 14
Birthday: April 13th
Personality: John is an easygoing kid. Not a lot bothers him - and many people close to him have tried their hardest to figure out what does. What most people would find annoying, John finds funny. He was quite literally born and raised a prankster, and he plays a lot of practical jokes on people. He also enjoys wordplay and creating puns.
He's very friendly, and is fiercely loyal to those who show him respect and friendship in return - even if he doesn't see their true motivations at first, which is one of John's biggest downfalls. He tries to see the good in people, and although he considers himself a 'hero', if he makes friends with someone who's not necessarily so nice but puts trust in him, he'll do his best to defend them.
John has been marked as the 'leader' of his group, which is something new to him, and so he does try his best at it, but the new role is a little awkward for him. He's not so good at public speaking or public pep talks, and often stumbles over his words or uses entirely too many. The same goes for him trying to give advice to others. He's never really been the leader of anything before, so he's used to obeying orders and commands, for the simple fact that the person ordering him to do something ordered him to do it.
John is a pretty creative guy when he wants to be, and displays this by doing magic tricks, making up new jokes to tell, and modifying his battle hammers.
Appearance: John is a smallish kid for his age - short and scrawny with knobbly joints that his Dad constantly tells him he'll eventually grow into. He has blue eyes which constantly have large, rectangular glasses in front of them - he's a bit nearsighted. John's dentist constantly tells his father that he needs braces, but they can't afford them, so he has a bit of an overbite. He's got messy black hair that could always use a bit of a trim, but John hasn't exactly mastered personal hygiene yet. (The idea of shaving is still a mystical art to him.)
When he's not in costume, John's style is pretty understated. His Dad still buys a lot of his clothes for him, regrettably, so he wears a lot of shorts and shoes that are a bit too kiddish for his tastes. He wears a lot of cartoon and video-game related t-shirts, though.
John designed his Airtime costume himself. He wears a blue t-shirt with a stylized wind symbol on it and dark blue pajama pants. He also wears yellow running sneakers and a blue hood/cape that looks a bit like a long windsock. When he's feeling like people will be extra suspicious, he wears a pair of fake nose glasses which he thinks is a very Clever Disguise.
History: John was adopted when he was a baby and was brought up by his Dad and Nanna, ordinary citizens of Townsville. His Nanna owned a joke shop in the city and his father helped out occasionally, but preferred to work an office job. Nanna raised John to have a great sense of humor, and could often be found teaching John some of his best practical jokes or baking cookies for him - she passed on her skills to Dad, who created many pies for John, which he would tire of easily.
Dad, on the other hand, in what has been seen as a failed attempt to bond with him, began to collect harlequins and clown paraphernalia and placed them around the house, hoping they would spark John's interest more. (In all actuality, John finds the harlequins a bit creepy.) John loved his father, but often finds him to be incredibly overbearing and a little embarrassing.
In school, John tried to be as friendly as he could be, but many of his classmates found him annoying and a little simple-minded. His first close friends were actually made over the internet - Rose Lalonde, Dave Strider, and Jade Harley. They met while playing an MMORPG called SBURB and formed a party together. The group finally one day decided to meet in person, and discovered that the whole time they did not live too far from one another.
He discovered his powers only one year ago, just before a few of his friends started to develop abilities of their own. John's dad and some of his co-workers were kidnapped by security robots called Shale Imps that escaped from the robotics company that worked two floors above them. The imps' programming was faulty and made them believe that groups of men in suits convening together were actually spies and were a threat. (The robotics staff members mostly dressed down to work.)
When he got home from school that day, his Nanna told him that his father hadn't gotten home at his normal time, and she asked John to bike over to his office and ask him what was wrong, as he wasn't picking up any of her phone calls and her hip was bothering her that day. John, as usual, complied, and rode his bike to the office, where he found his dad and some co-workers being poked and prodded at by the imps with lighters that were built into their circuitry.
Although John harbors some angst for his dad, he was truly worried about him at the time, and his fear manifested a great whirlwind which blew out the fires and pushed the imps out of a window. There was a lot of smoke and burning suit jackets, but John managed to pull his dad out. (His co-workers weren't so lucky - this still bothers John.)
John had heard about heroes in the city before and other people with special abilities. He'd heard they were mistreated, but a lot of people still seemed to keep pushing on and using their abilities to help out. He took up the mantle of Airtime after the incident.
Secret Identity: When John's not doing the Windy Thing, he's in eighth grade in the local K-12 school. He lives in a small house with his Dad and Nanna. John enjoys watching all kinds of movies (especially 1980s and 1990s comedies) and playing practical jokes on people, as well as doing magic tricks and playing video games. He owns a pet salamander named Casey.
Power: John has affectionately named his power the Windy Thing. He has the ability to control air in the space around him. He can create large gusts of wind as well as whirlwinds and tornadoes that can drill into the earth. John can use the Windy Thing to send objects flying through the air, but has difficulty propelling himself through the air.
John is not very strong physically, though, but very innovative. In hand to hand combat, John often uses lightweight hammers he's created and built himself - although they're not exactly structurally sound, they get the job done. His current favorite is the Pogo Hammer, which he created by combining a sledgehammer and the ends of small pogo-sticks. John uses the Pogo Hammer in tandem with the Windy Thing to launch himself into the air while fighting.
RP Sample:
"Reporting live, this is Robin Scherbatsky for Metro News 1. I'm here with local legend and kid hero Airtime, who with his crime-fighting friends the Beta Session, have managed to take down an overgrown green mutated skull attacking the downtown area. Airtime, what's it like having this much on your shoulders?"
John pulls his hood a little farther forward on his head and laughs quietly, his shoulders shaking. He looks up at the reporter and gives her his best 'hero smile', but unfortunately his teeth stick out more than the stereotypical 'hero' and he just ends up looking silly. "well, it's...difficult, i guess! but fun. and i mean, we have these new powers. we might as well use them!" He shrugs, laughing again.
John looks around at his three other friends. t-m0ney$ is sending away alternate-timeline versions of himself that helped them with the battle, Borealis is explaining (in a long and drawn-out monologue) exactly what happened to the police officers, and behind him, Atomic Bonsai, who was supposed to be in charge of shrinking the giant mutated skull, was jumping behind him, trying to get in frame.
He turns to Atomic Bonsai, giving her a high five and jerking his head in the direction of the skull. She nods, her robotic dog-ears twitching, and she goes off in that direction to go work her magic.
John fondly regards his friends again, before turning back to the reporter. "it's difficult, yeah. but i'm glad i have my friends around. i couldn't do it alone."
Other: John's One True Weakness is peanuts. He's deathly allergic to them.
